Bridgetown.
The Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) fighting beach erosion, while enhancing Barbados' shoreline at the time.
Coastal Engineer with the CZMU Ricardo Arthur ,told Trakker News the unit has enhanced the shoreline at the Richard Haynes Boardwalk in Christ Church, the Welches Beach Project in the same parish, the Holetown Beach Improvement Project and the Holetown Waterfront Improvement Project in St James.
Arthur said the Coastal Risk Assessment and Management Programme which is currently taking place, will allow diagnostic studies on how storm surges and other coastal risks will affect the country.
He stated that once it is competed, officials would be in a better position to form decisions about where interventions were needed and the methods to use.
According to Arthur, the majority of the island's beaches are in a state of dynamic equilibrium. He explained that when a beach became eroded because of a storm event, the sand was usually returned within a few days depending on the severity of the event.
However he noted that there were instances were sand was transported so far offshore by a high energy event, that even went calmer conditions returned there was permanent loss.
Arthur pointed out two feasibility studies on the east and west coats were conducted and an intergrated Coastal Zone Management Plan to guide Barbados development and protect the island's shoreline developed.
