Georgetown: The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners’ Association (GGDMA) says that with the recent escalation of violent and deadly attacks on miners by bandits on the coastland is a worrying pattern.
GGDMA Patrick Harding said the mining sector has lucrative returns and he hopes that the miners are not being attacked for such reasons.
Adding that he is very concerned about miners being killed, robbed and abused where security is supposed to be available, he said attacks on miners in the mining districts have reduced, but miners are becoming vulnerable on the coastland.
Harding further noted that the organisation engaged the Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee upon the topic of miners being able to protect themselves with firearms. However, the snail pace system for the issuance of firearm licences is worrisome.
