Georgetown: Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), will host a debating competition in observance of International World Water Day 2013 (March 22) with the students of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus.
On March 22, Guyana will join the rest of the World in observing International World Water Day, an observance initiated by the United Nations General Assembly to focus on the protection of freshwater resources. The 2013 observance is being held under the theme “International Year of Water Cooperation”.
According to Hon. Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, “I am pleased that Guyana Water Inc. will continue its education thrust with a debating competition which will highlight the issue of water resource management in Guyana”.
The Minister stated that this year’s WWD theme is appropriate since water resource management is currently being discussed worldwide. He emphasized that there should be a national focus on the need for all water users to cooperate in the interest of strategically managing water resources with the overarching aim being to protect and conserve vital freshwater resources. “I urge all Guyanese to view the broadcast of the debate as the students will be highlighting vital points regarding integrated water resource management” stated Minister Ali, “public education remains a priority as every GWI customer must be responsible for water management.”
The International World Water Day Debating Competition will be broadcast on World Water Day Friday March 22 from 19:00hours on the National Communications Network, NCN. A series of school visits are also planned for the week of World Water Day as well as a prize giveaway via the company’s official Facebook fan-page.
