Deputy Commissioner Graham hosts meeting with senior women police

Georgetown: The Guyana Police Force first female Deputy Commissioner Maxine Graham recently held a talk with female Officers of the Guyana Police Force from the rank of Inspector to Superintendent.

She told the female ranks that looking within and being able to identify challenges, weaknesses and strengths of self, is a quality possessed and showcased by all the greats of present and past times

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the need for constant introspection as this practice can also help in dealing with matters as well as day to day interfacing with colleagues and members of the public.

Deputy Commissioner Graham spoke on several issues including, cooperation among female ranks and the importance of confidentiality; installing that listening to the concerns of junior ranks is important if the Force is to maintain its objective.

The most Senior Female Officer of the Force, who also heads of the Guyana Association of Women Police, told all present at the Officers’ Training Centre  that “We are to have one voice. One standard is the only way forward and only through cooperation and a watchful eye can the mandate and principles of the administration be successfully materialized into a modern Police Force.”

Adding that “we all asked for a change and must now accept that change”, Ms. Graham was alluding to the appointment of the new Commissioner of Police and his four Deputies but more specifically, the posture of the administration of the Force against corruption, strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and improving the working environment and relations with all ranks of the Force, all with the aim of maintaining a Police Force whose service is effective, objective and unmatched.

She underscoring that there is need for a refocus on Standing Order NO. 12 which speaks to “Appearance and Conduct” highlighting the importance of the senior women of the Force to lead by example

The Deputy Commissioner said that these include respecting Senior Officers, operating in a professional manner at work as well as when off duty, being impartial in dealing with matters, obedience in relation to carrying out instructions given by superiors are all a part of observing Standing Order 12.

She added that overtime; it has been observed that many ranks have been involved in the altering of uniforms among other breaches of the Standing Order.

Ms. Maxine Graham DSM who served as second-in- Command “Administration” before assuming the post of Deputy Commissioner “Operations”, another historic feat, is known for her immovable stance as it relates to discipline. Firm, assertive and objective are some words attributed to her character and approach, and which are worthy of emulation.
