Deputy Principal of the UWI says library service should be expanded

Bridgetown.

Deputy Principal of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies Professor Eudine Barriteau says the the National Library Service has an even greater role to play in 21st century Barbados.

She made the comment  while delivering the feature address during a public lecture to commemorate 165 years of the National Library Service earlier this week.

According to Professor Barriteau, service today should be more concerned about sifting information and creating knowledge.

Professor Barriteau says libraries existed in Barbados from the 1700's but were hardly free.

She thinks the provision of a public library system is an unfinished project and there is still not equality of access to all.

Barriteau said the former Carneige building at Coleridge Street which was housed main branch of the library in Bridgetown  should be restored and the National Library Service expanded.
