Dharmic Sabha plans countrywide 177th Indian Arrival Celebrations

Sonu Nigam 2014 #1Georgetown: The Guyana Hindu Dharmic  Sabha will be holding several cultural events to mark the 177th anniversary of Indian Arrival in Guyana. Concerts will be held on Thursday April 30th at Damon Square, Anna Regina, Essequibo, Friday May 1st at the Bath Community Centre Ground, West Berbice, Saturday May 2nd at Bal Nivas Grounds atAnkerville, Corentyne and Tuesday May 5th at the OceanviewMandir Compound, West Demerara. All events commence at 6pm. There will be performances by the Sabha’s Dharmic NrityaSangh and other talented dance groups as well as several top Guyanese singers including Emerging Voices winner VishalieSukram, SookraneBoodhoo, Rekha Singh and Mona Gowkarran. Traditional items including tassa drumming and Raagragini style singing will also be featured on the programmes.

In addition, there will be exhibitions at the various venues depicting aspects of indentureship and traditional food stalls. Admission to all events is free and no alcohol will be allowed. The Sabha would like to thank Digicel for supporting these events.

On Sunday May 3rd, the MahilaMandalee, women’s section of the Sabha, will be hosting a traditional brunch at the PanditReepu Daman Persaud Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra in Prashad Nagar from 10:30am including hot sadarotis, chokhas, pakoras and baturas. Tickets cost $1000 and proceeds will be used towards the Mandalee’s literacy programme. Students from the Mandalee’s cookery class will receive certificates for completing their Levels 1 and 2 vegetarian cookery courses and will showcase the dishes that they have learnt and vie for prizes based on best taste and presentation. Patrons will have a chance to sample the dishes prepared by the students.
