Disaster Risk Management plan to be integrated – Dr. Luncheon

Georgetown : During Cabinet’s statutory meeting on November 4, 2014, Cabinet endorsed the recommendation of its committee that considered the policies and principles of Disaster Risk Management that are intended to influence Guyana’s future development.  This was reported by Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) Dr. Roger Luncheon during his post-Cabinet media briefing.

Dr. Luncheon pointed out that the policies and principles of the plan had evolved over the last three years of project activity executed by the Civil Defence Commission, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the International Development Bank. He added that their output became the policies and principles of Disaster Risk Management and integrated disaster risk reduction.

The HPS observed that from the IDB side, the focus was on Disaster Risk Management: the plan for Guyana, and the implementation of this plan over the next 10 years. Focus was placed on the many different sectors within which Disaster Risk Management had to take a role.

Regarding the UNDP, he stated that the focus was more definitively boosting, enhancing the national and the local capacity to deal with disaster and to respond. They also provided output that addressed the various indices of Disaster Risk Management. “Armed with these principles and policies, the administration is now in a position to integrate DRM and DRR into its developmental plan for the country,” Dr. Luncheon declared.
