Dismissal of rape charge did prove innocence says Commissioner

Bridgetown.

The dismissal of a double rape charge last week against Derick Crawford does not prove his innocence says Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin.

Last Thursday Crawford, who was accused of raping two British women  in separate incidents in October 2010 had his rape cases dismissed.

Asked by journalists to respond to calls from Crawford's lawyer Andrew Pilgrim for an inquiry into the police  investigated the rapes and suspension of the officers involved.the Commissioner said:"I will be having a series of meetings with officials on the case and I will speak on the matter in due course. What I will say is that the court's decision did not reflect guilt or innocence".

He stressed that  Director of Public Prosecutions Charles Leacock, QC, discontinued the case for want of prosecution after the two women Rachel Turner and Diane Davies refused to testify against Crawford.

They insisted that the police had charged the wrong man and accused them of shoddy investigations.
