Georgetown: As President David Granger continues to take his message of transformation and empowerment through upcoming Local Government Elections, he told residents of Mahdia to select leaders who will direct the region’s wealth to diversify the region’s economy for the people’s benefit.
The Head of State made the call today during a meeting with residents of Mahdia and surrounding villages at the newly constructed Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) office. President Granger and a team of high-level government officials are in the community for the official launch of Mahdia as a township.
The President said the region’s rich resources can eliminate poverty in the Potaro-Siparuni region. “This region must move forward economically. Mahdia can produce any commodity – tomatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, meat – you don’t need to import anything. This region can be self-sufficient with good leadership.”
He advised residents to take a page from those who are cognisant of the region’s vast potential and have wisely invested in it.
“I want to see Mahdia take its place next to the other towns. We too need to establish businesses and aid in creating employment. The children in Mahdia must have a bright future and equal opportunities to those on the coast.”
The Head of State reminded that the government is committed to providing all citizens with a good life and has restored local democracy by reintroducing the Local Government Elections (LGE), the second of which is scheduled for November 12 this year.
In his remarks, Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan stated that Guyana is already transforming, and greater developments are imminent. “The oil and gas industry will have a big impact on the economy, but you must select leaders who will make this a reality and keep our resources in safe hands.”
Minister of State Joseph Harmon and Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally, Mayors Gifford Marshall, Henry Smith and Waneka Arrindell were also in attendance.
At the end of the event, more than 20 bicycles were presented to students
