Georgetown: Following the commencement of the drilling of eight wells in the Upper-Takutu-Upper Essequibo area on October 4, to date, wells at Karaudanawa, Aishalton and Chuirknau have been completed.
These wells were cleaned and tested, and are capable of producing potable water for the communities. The pumps and the solar systems will be installed by the Brazilians.
The project which is a collaborative effort between the governments of Guyana and Brazil and aims to assist in the storage of water in the dry season in the region
Drilling of wells are ongoing at Shea and Awarewanau, while another team is preparing the solar panels and pumps for installation.
The Ministry of the Presidency on October 17, 2018 stated that pursuant to the terms of the agreement on technical cooperation between the two governments, the drilling of the fourth well in Awaruwaunau Village, South Rupununi, in Region Nine commenced on October 16, 2018. This followed closely on the heels of similar exercises in Aishalton, Chukrikednau and Karaudanawa. So far, water was found in all of the areas drilled.
On October 16, 2018, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said that on October 15, 2018 The Brazilian Army completed the drilling of the third of 8 wells it was scheduled to drill in Region 9. GWI’s Water Resources Manager, Mr. Orin Browne was on scene to witness the drilling process.
The Aishalton well Region 9, which was dug at its required depth of 264 feet, through rocky formation for a duration of just 6 hours. The well is said to be yielding approximately 90 cubic meters of water per hour.
Drilling is on schedule and the official handing over is set for November 28,2018.
