Seven tons of cannabis held in police custody were burn in the furnace at the Grantley Adams International Airport yesterday.The drug worth million of dollars were transported to the GAIA in three trucks.
Public Relations Officer of the Royal Barbados Police Force Inspector David Welch told journalists the burning of the cannabis was the first in a series of bulk destruction of ilegal as lawmen intensifies they efforts at seizures across the island.
Welch stated the drug that were burned were from drugs landings and seizures dating back to 2010 and explained some of the cannabis were related to cases still pending before the law courts.
He pointed out that under the Evidence Act, the Commissioner of Police had the authority to conduct sample tests of each package in the presence of the accused and to destroy the remainder.
Welch said the force would be using the sample and burn method from now on and made it clear that the force would not be easing up its efforts in the figth against illegal drugs around the country.
