Drugs mules a worry for lawman

Bridgetown.

Head of the Royal Barbados Police Force Drugs Unit, Senior Superintendent Grafton Phillips has expresed concern about the frequency of people being caught with drugs stashed in their stomachs.

According to Phillips because of the lack adequate alert mechanisms at the island's port of entry, the police are always on the lookout for swallowers.

"Unlike other jurisdictions we don't have the proper procedures to detect people who ingest drugs and try to enter the country. It is a security feature that we need to put in place", Phillips said.

He however described last year as successsful one for lawmen with several seizures and arrests.

"We have stepped up our patrol at both ports and the coastal areas and we are satisfied with our work as we developed more strategies to counterattack the drug traffickers", Phillips said.

In the absence of specific statistics the senior lawman note that several seizures of locally grown marijuana  last year indicated that attempts were being made to cultivate ganja in large amounts on the island.
