Port of Spain; Nine year old Shelly Lalla is fighting for her life at the San Fernando General Hospital, after being run over by a car driven by a 69 year old man. The child suffered head chest and leg injuries after she was dragged some 30 feet by the car. The accident took place in the yard of the little girl's home at Powdharie Road, Couva.
The driver has since been charged and is expected to appear at the Couva Magistrate Court today. Shelly's father, Fred Lalla explained that the child was playing cricket in the yard of her home around 5.30pm, when the driver lost control of his car and ended up in the yard; dragging Shelly until she ended up in a nearby drain. The driver escaped unhurt.
Shelly was taken to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and is now warded in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit. The car has been impounded and Couva police are continuing investigations.
