Port of Spain; The Dry Season is upon us and as evidence the bush fires have reared its ugly head. On Saturday evening a huge bush fire engulfed the hills of the Maraval/Debe area. Residents said it was a terrifying experience as the fire kept drawing towards their homes while it raged from above. The fire blazed for several hours before the fire service was able to bring it under some form of control. Several appliances had to be called out to assist in this venture but they were eventually able to calm the raging blaze. But up until late Sunday evening, evidence could still be seen as smoke was observed coming from the top of the hill.
Today another bush fire posed a serious problem, but this time it was not a threat on residence but workers at the NP Sea Lots Plant. They had to be evacuated after a bush fire in the nearby bushes caused panic and several trucks were observed being removed from the compound. The workers had to also assemble at their muster point, until the fire was contained and everyone assured that it was safe to return to work. Every year bush fires pose serious problems during the dry season and citizens are urged to be extra careful when burning anything or discarding items such as cigarette butts. .
