Georgetown : Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma last evening in the National Assembly began his budget debate presentation by debunking statements from the opposition benches. The debate on the $230B National Budget, commenced on Monday.
Addressing issues related to crime, Minister Sharma informed the National Assembly that under the previous administration this issue became a nightmare as more than 500 persons were killed, a minister and his family were slaughtered, a diplomat kidnapped, death squads rose to prominence, law abiding citizens were threatened and the minister accountable for security refused to accept responsibility by resigning.
He asserted that the actions of the new administration to present an early budget will stimulate economic growth as it will help the private sector to be better organised. He added that early in the year the private sector will be able to forecast where government will be spending heavily and take advantage accordingly.
He stated that the achievements made by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) in 2015 were as a result of the coalition government’s system of management which allowed managers to function without political interference, hence the Skeldon sugar factory performed.
The surge of creative activities began with Budget 2015 setting the stage for vision 20/20 and beyond. “The increase in minimum wage from $39,000 to $50,000, five percent increase and $5000 for public servants earning above $50,000, increases in old age pension, public assistance rising, uniform assistance rising and other measures set the platform which budget 2016 seeks to build on.” This is what the coalition government is about-bridging inequality and equal rights for all, Minister Sharma asserted.
The measures outlined in Budget 2016 make it possible for the working class to own a new car with new tyres and having the assurance of stabilised prices, thereby enjoying the good life. Minister Sharma indicated that the new measures will enable the working class to own at least a 2012, 1800 cc Toyota Premio for $5M as compared to $8.9M which would have been paid had not the measures been introduced by the administration.
Additionally the $9B injection in GuySuCo will also realise growth for the sugar industry which will positively impact the economy. This, along with other measures of ensuring transparency and accountability in the procurement process, will ensure greater inclusion of contractors, as training sessions will be conducted to guide them how to properly complete procurement forms.
The Junior Finance Minister asserted that the investments in the tourism sector, and hinterland development, coupled with the expansion of the small business sector, indicate that the administration is truly about ensuring citizens enjoy a good life.
