Georgetown: Kit Nascimento, Executive Member, Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) said that he is proud that the association and the Government have been able to make it easier for yachters to enter the country. He said that yachters can clear customs and immigrations in 15 minutes. He noted that this is significant progress as it puts Guyana ahead of many other Caribbean countries that are yet to find ways to facilitate a smooth entry process.
Additionally, the entrance of the Essequibo River has been surveyed and satellite wave points are now available to guide yachts into the river. Yachters no longer need to rely on land marks and other methods for direction.
It is hoped that by making it easier for yachts’ entry, prospective visitors would be attracted to the country as many sail pass Guyana to other Caribbean countries.
For 2012 there were approximately 15 yachts with an average of three or four persons on board that visited Guyana. Nascimento believes that the yachting community is massive and soon word of Guyana’s alluring beauty will spread to others. Thus far there has been increased interest in Guyana as a safe anchorage.
