Berbice: Residents of villages that comprise the East Bank Berbice took to the streets yesterday to voice their concerns about the deplorable state of their main roads. The residents created a barricade congesting traffic in that area for most of the day. There were shouts of "we want the government to listen to us!"; "we need new roads!", and "where did the $206m go?" One of the residents told TrakkerNews that in 2009, the then Regional Administrative Officer, Faizal Jafferally, and Minister of Works, Robeson Benn, met with them to discuss the state of the roads and assured them that $206m was going to be invested in the construction of new roads on the East Bank. The resident went on to say that "2010 come and gone, no road. 2011 come and gone, no road. We just want know wha happen to di money that Jaferally talk about…We want him to meet with us and tell us where the money gone." When the present Regional Administrative Officer, Dr.Armogan, arrived at the scene of the protest some of the protesters refused to listen to him, positing that their issue was not his concern and the persons that they needed to confer with are Mr. Faizal Jafferally and Minister Robeson Benn. On the other hand, some of the protesters felt that their issue needs to be addressed directly by President Ramotar, as they stressed that like the residents of East Canje they too are tax payers, and therefore they deserve to receive the same standard of service that is given to the East Canje and Corentyne residents. The protesters made it quite clear that their actions will continue until their demands are met: "The ministry gotta stop fulling hole and give we a brand new road, until di President come we nah gon stop."
