Berbice: Yesterday, twenty- year- old Jemison Williams of Lot 27 Sheet Anchor Village was remanded to prison on a charge of carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 15 by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
The prosecution successfully opposed bail on the grounds that after the alleged commission of the crime the defendant fled the jurisdiction and was only apprehended last week for another offence of a similar nature.
The accused had carnal knowledge of the minor between Saturday, August 25, 2009 and Monday, September 14, 2009 at Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, Berbice. He was charged contrary to Section 70 of the Criminal Law [Offences] Amendment Act 2005. The next court day has been set for March 30 for the commencement of the preliminary inquiry. According to a source close to the investigation the defendant had invited the girl to his parents’ house which she frequented, under the pretext that his sister requested that she came over to do school work. He allegedly subdued her and had sex with her. The defendant reportedly turned up the music he was playing, drowning out her cries for help. The virtual complainant was 14 at the time of the incident and had to drop out of school due to her resultant pregnancy. After the birth of the child that is being raised by her parents, the girl recommenced school.
