Ecuador’s Foreign Minister meets President Ramotar – Regional issues the focus of discussions

Georgetown : The ongoing issues surrounding the administration of the Nicolas Maduro government in Venezuela were among the main topics discussed by the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino when he met President Donald Ramotar.

Speaking to the Government Information Agency (GINA) via his translator, the foreign minister said that Columbia, Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador have been playing a role in dialogue with the Maduro administration and opposition forces, following a series of clashes which has left many dead or wounded, and millions of dollars in property damaged. President Ramotar was apprised of the developments in this regard. The need for Caricom to incorporate a standard system of laws, regarding human rights issues, was also raised by the minister. “We believe that if all the systems are addressed within the Organisation of American States, then all the countries with the region can be incorporated and we can deal with these issues in a balanced way”.

He added that the current legal systems, throughout the regions, give some persons more rights than others and is unfair. “It cannot be perceived that some rights are more important than others as all are equally important and should be treated the same way”.

Some other issues of bilateral importance were also discussed and it was pointed out that whilst Ecuador was not a wealthy nation, there was a lot of positive experience that they could share with other countries.
