Education a tool for life

Bridgetown.

The aim of the Ministry of Education is to educate Barbadians for life says  Prime Minister of Barbados Freundel Stuart.

Speaking at a ceremony in which the Garrison Secondary School was renamed Graydon Sealy Secondary School after its first principal, Stuart said :"When all is said and done, education is not intended to prepare you simply for the world of work.  Education  must prepare you for life.

Congratulating and thanking Sealy for his contribution to education, Stuart said the school had produced some of Barbados' most distinguished citizens.

Sealy in his speech accepted the honour of the being renamed after him and issued a challenge to education planners to rethink the Eleven Plus examinations, while raising questions about its impact on students and teachers.
"If performance of that exam is an aacurate gauge of academic ability, why are pupils with low exam scores following the same curriculm as those with high scores? Why aren' teachers of the underachieving students being trained in remedial instruction"? Sealy asked.

He told a school hall packed with fellow educators, students and alumni: "It is the lingering love of teaching in me coupled with my love for children which compels me to make these point".
