Education Minister defends position of shortage of Maths and Science teachers-claims improvements of grades

Georgetown : Minister of Education Shaik Baksh in response to People’s National Congress Reform, Member of Parliament Amna Ali, with respect to programmes introduced by the Ministry to alleviate inadequacies of mathematics and science teachers in the school system, said that while there are some levels of deficiency, improvements in grades have outnumbered the faults.

Programmes over the years, implemented through the National Centre for Education Resource Development (NCERD), have since seen improved results in mathematics notwithstanding shortages, the Minister highlighted.
“In mathematics the pass rate for CSEC in 2008 was 30.6 percent; 2009, 31.5 percent and 2010, 34.5 percent, so we have been seeing improvements in the areas as we progress. But clearly, we would like to see significant improvement in these areas and the Ministry has been engaged in a number of programmes and initiatives to deal with this critical shortage,” he said.

“In science, we have also 36 students in training and they are to graduate in September so this will improve the human resources in the system. Importantly we have incentivized the system so that when teachers complete the non-graduate certificate courses, they receive increments in the scale and it is our intention to continue with this programme,” he emphasised.
