Education Minister pleased with corporal punishment, automatic promotion consultation

Georgetown : Education Minister Priya Manickchand has expressed satisfaction with the response from teachers, parents and relevant stakeholder within the education sector during the countrywide consultation held on the abolition of corporal punishment and automatic promotion in the school system.

She stated that constructive comments were highlighted and suggestions raised on the latter, as teachers share their thoughts on the negatives which may derive if a decision is to be taken to completely remove corporal punishment from the school system.

“These consultations are necessary as they will be taken into consideration, before a formal decision is made on whether the corporal punishment or automatic promotion is removed in its entirety from the system,” she said.

According to Minister Manickchand, nothing is carved in stone and the consultation by the Ministry, which was taken to every Region, will form the basis on which a decision is to be made.

A report will be compiled and the motion will be taken before a Special Select Committee in the National Assembly for consideration, within one month.

“Citizens can rest assured, that before a decision is taken careful consideration of the issues and comments made will be taken into consideration,” Minister Manickchand said.

During the meeting, teachers were addressed by Coordinator, School Board Secretariat, Melcita Bovell who pointed to the fact that statistics have shown that 65 percent of retention was at  grade 10.

As such, she called on the teachers to do more collectively to ensure that there are fewer failures among students by properly administering the school’s curriculum.
