Education Ministry takes pilot project to Region Nine

Region Nine : St Ignatius Secondary School at Region Nine is the latest beneficiary of the Ministry of Education’s pilot project aimed at improving student performance in Mathematics and English.

The project which targets fifth form students from secondary schools in Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10; provides students and teachers with teaching and learning resources, inclusive of calculators; text books, solutions for Mathematics and English, learning DVDs and teaching guides.

Chief Education Officer Olato Sam during a visit to St. Ignatius Secondary on Friday, handed over the materials to the school’s Head Mistress Yvette Archer.
He said that the materials will aid in the development and advancement of the school. “Our aim at the Ministry is to ensure that students excel in their academics. These two subjects are important because if you don’t have Maths and English one can never be allowed into the University of Guyana or be the beneficiary of scholarships,” he said.

Citing the need for more qualified teachers within the school system, the official told the school’s teachers to work out systems that would address students’ weaknesses. He encouraged the students to take up the task of becoming a teacher, so as to better serve their community.
