Georgetown: In a coordinated effort to further strengthen the delivery of Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) within the Guyanese school system, the Ministry of Education (MOE) in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), CARICOM and a number of other stakeholders, are meeting for two days to review Guyana’s HFLE programme. This two-day activity is being held under the theme, “Revisiting Health and Family Life Education in Guyana: A comprehensive approach to children’s success in the 21st century.”
Speaking at the short opening ceremony held at Parc Rayne Houston, was the Chief Education Officer (CEO), Mr. Olato Sam, who reflected on some of the challenges experienced and progress made since the MOE first piloted its HFLE programme in schools in 2010. “In September 2010, the MOE piloted HFLE as a timetabled subject in 30 secondary schools. By 2011, that pilot was expanded to 40 additional schools, bringing the number of pilot schools to 70. By 2012, HFLE was rolled out to 98 schools in the education system as a full-fledged timetabled entity; that number has now reached 117,” the CEO said.
He went on to state that: “HFLE is now well entrenched in structures of the education system at both the primary and secondary levels. It is expected that with a little more work, the programme will be implemented in all grades at the primary and secondary levels.”
The CEO underscored the importance of having HFLE as part of the national curriculum and made reference to its significance as a tool for addressing some of the realities facing the youth today. He urged participants to engage in meaningful deliberations so as to further enhance the Ministry’s delivery of HFLE to schools nationwide.
