Georgetown: As the administration continues to build the capacity among members of the various local government organs, it was announced that representatives of eight Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and Municipal Councils are expected to participate in knowledge and skills-building workshops in 2019.
This was revealed by Minister of Finance Winston Jordan, during his 2019 Budget presentation in the National Assembly.
Minister Jordan said that this initiative is in keeping with President David Granger’s charge to Municipal Councils and NDCs to become more proactive regarding the improvement of the local economy, in order to ensure the generation and maintenance of revenue.
The training, the Finance Minister explained, will help local organs to become more effective and efficient in the execution of their roles and responsibilities in the development of their respective communities.
Thus far, the Government has targeted over 1,000 persons for training in areas such as planning, procurement and financial management.
For 2018, fifty-nine out of sixty-two NDCs across the country were able to commence and execute developmental projects within their communities with subventions from the administration. The subventions in the amount of $2Million are granted annually to assist the NDCs with developmental capital works within their respective communities including the construction of bridges and culverts and road rehabilitation among other projects.
