Georgetown : Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Bharrat Dindyal recently speaking to the media said, electricity theft has been a major challenge for the power company as persons have been rampantly pursuing the culture.
He explained while there has been an increase in the spate, this will only come to an end if more consumers are placed before the courts.
GPL is currently using a new type of meter for large businesses, while small consumers will be using the pre-paid meter system, which doesn’t allow consumers access to the system.
Several amendments such as the Electricity Sector Reform (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to break the culture in electricity theft has also been passed in the National Assembly. This was designed to combat commercial losses GPL has been enduring over the past years due to illegal connections and electricity theft.
The local power company boss pointed out that prices of fuel have increased on the world market which has impacted to the local sector. This has seen the power company paying a further increase of $2B for the first quarter of this year.
While significant increases in fuel prices cost GPL approximately US$1M per year, the CEO, has assured that there will be ‘no increase in tariffs’.
