Georgetown: In keeping with the Government of Guyana’s plans to develop a 'Green Economy' and as part of their Strategic Plan, the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) recently at the Learning and Resource Centre in the soon to be Township of Bartica, held the Seminar titled ‘Taking Account of Energy Efficiency in Procurement’.
Facilitated by GEA’s Energy Engineer, Mr. Brian Constantine, the Seminar targeted Government Ministries and the Private Sector. Economist, Ms. Shevon Wood, in her opening remarks thanked the participants, who represented nineteen (19) organizations inclusive of schools, for their attendance and pointed out the importance and timeliness of the seminar. She posited that “…in light of the recent energy development in Bartica and its soon to be status as the first Green Town, energy efficiency would play an integral role in ensuring a reduction in the carbon footprint of Barticians and would lend to the overall energy security of Guyana as a whole”. A brief session on the importance of energy conservation and efficiency and its impact on the environment along with a question and answer segment concluded the seminar.
The objective of the seminar was to stimulate dialogue, discuss and bring awareness to benefits of Energy Efficient Procurement and what it entails while highlighting the Procurement Policy statement which states that ‘All public procurement of electrical appliances shall include, as part of the decision-making process, an evaluation of the annual operating energy costs of the various electrical appliances’. Participants were made aware of certain aspects of the Energy policy and encouraged to ensure that the annual operating energy costs of electrical appliances must be included as part of the evaluation in the procurement process.
The Guyana Energy Agency will continue to hosts such activities at the Community level as part of their information dissemination mandate which coincides with Government’s vision for sustainable economic growth and the creation of a green economy.
