EU has confidence in Guyana’s political affairs

Georgetown: Eleven members of the European Union were hosted by the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams at the Attorney General’s Chambers on April 8. This high-level meeting comes on the heels of the defeat of the December 21 vote in the Appellate Court on March 22.

Subsequent to the culmination of the meeting, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union, Phillippe Coessens highlighted the purpose of the gathering. Coessens said the delegation wanted to get a sense “of the political situation in the country,” particularly from a legal standpoint. To this end, Coessens commended the Attorney General for delivering a comprehensive overview of the current political state of affairs in the country.

Further, Coessens expressed his team’s confidence in Guyana’s current state of affairs. “It is important to see that there is good governance… [and] that democracy is working, the principles are respected,” he said.

The Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation also stated the meeting was not initially planned due to concerns about Guyana’s political situation, noting it was a matter of coincidence, but rather the meeting was in the pipeline for a period of time. The Delegation of the European Union also plans to meet with other government officials in the coming days.
