Georgetown: For the first time in Guyana’s history, citizens can now have access to restorative eye surgery at the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
As such $4.8 Million worth of Vitro retinal surgical equipment was donated to the GPHC Friday by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The equipment will allow medical retinal specialists to treat conditions such as diabetic retinopathy.
Prior to today, Guyanese had to travel abroad for treatment, a costly activity.
Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC Brigadier George Lewis (ret’d) disclosed that over the last few years GPHC has embarked on several improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and range of services provided. He said the Ministry of Public Health spends upward of $100Million annually on the Department of Ophthalmology.
Lewis stated with the equipment in hand, students will be trained by Dr. Corey, a visiting surgeon from the USA.
Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, Glendon Fogenay, hailed the provision of this service, as important.
“It means that our citizenry can have their surgeries done at home which will give them more time to recover at home,” Fogenay explained.
