February session of Berbice Assizes opens with 36 cases

Criminal-JusticeGeorgetown: The October Session of the 2014 Berbice Assizes was closed on Tuesday and moments later the February Session was opened. The session will be presided over by Justice Brassington Reynolds.

A total of 36 cases are listed to be heard during the Berbice Criminal Assizes February 2015 session. This was told to the court when Senior Superintendant of Prisons (ag) Linder Cornette presented the Goal delivery to the court on Tuesday.

He said that there were no females awaiting trial in the High Court but there were 31 men waiting to stand trial in the Berbice Assizes for the capital offence of murder. There are three cases for sexual penetration and one for carnal knowledge.

Senior Superintendant of Prisons Cornette noted that three persons have indicated their willingness in pleading guilty to the offence of which they were indicted. The three, all of whom are accused of murder are Omar Bacchus, 23; Navin Sugrim, 25; and Bheem Evans, 53.

The session was opened with the traditional parade and march pass outside the High Court on Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). The parade was led by Assistant Superintendant of Police Ronald Ail and included 14 other ranks from B Division Police.

As the session opened, State Prosecutor Judith Mursaline brought two persons into the dock to be tried for murder.

A mixes jury was empanelled and the indictment was read to the defendants.

Dhairam Persaud also called “Prem” along with Yugeshwar Dhaniram also called “Sham” and “Jo Jo” are on trial for the April 29, 2012 murder of Sasenarine Persaud also called “Sookraj”.  Persaud is being represented by Attorney Kim Kite-John while Dhaniram ia being represented by Attorney Raymond Ali.

The jury however did not hear any facts for the case as the prosecution asked for an adjournment. The trial will commence on Tuesday. The persecution is expected to have the case completed in 12 working days.
