Fired and rehired

Bridgetown.

Workers at the state run Transport Board who when on a wildcat strike last Wednesday were fired and then rehired on the same day.

General Secretary of the Barbados Workers' Union (BWU), Sir Roy Trotman told a press conference yesterday evening, the industrial action began when simmering issues boiled over and hundreds of workers join in solidarity with a bus driver they thought was being victimized.

Sir Roy said quick action by the BWU saved the jobs of the workers after they were issued dismissal letters for abandoning their jobs during the strike.

According to Sir Roy, the strike at the Transport Board indicated that something is wrong at the entity and it must be examined properly in order for a resoultion to be found.

He pointed out that though the Executive Council of the BWU is clear that the rules should be followed, they must take into consideration that the laws were made for man and not man for those laws.

The union boss apologized to the commuting public, noting that the strikes was not fair, in causing them to suffer.

He added that the BWU will meet with the employees of the Transport Board to ensure that similar incidents do not occur.
