Bridgetown.
There is a shortage of fish in Barbados as a result many Barbadians will have to eat canned fish to maintain the Good Friday tradition of not eating meat.
Fish prices are expected to increase today because of scarcity with dolphin moving from $8.50 per pound to $10, while the price of the rare flying fish could be $2.50 each.
Fisheries experts are baffled as to why flying fish nd dolphins are not being found in the fishing grounds.
"We have had some pretty weird oceanographic events culminating in the sargassum (weed) we saw last summer", Dr Hazel Oxenford, a fisheries scientist with the University of the West Indies (UWI) told Trakker News.
"We have also seen some current reversals with the currents running the run way: we have had a couple of hot years and in 2010, there was a peculiar brown green water all summer instead of only a couple of days", she added.
According to Oxenford, there was no conclusive evidence to prove the fish disappearance and the unusual ocean patterns might have stalled the reproduction of flying fish and dolphins.
