Fishermen amongst quartet remanded for Hijacking, Piracy

Georgetown: Sanjay Jangbir, 18, Vishnu Jangbir, 22, Rajendra Parasaram, 19 and Mohendra Sancharran, 25, all appeared Monday before Magistrate Sherdell Issacs charged with Hijacking and Piracy.

It is alleged that on February 19, 2018, the four, armed with two firearms and a cutlass, robbed a vessel ‘Ana Teresa’ property of Vickash Balkisson.

The court was told that the four carted off an outboard engine valued $2M, 500 pounds of seine valued $2M, two batteries valued $60,000, eleven drums of gasoline valued $450,000 and food items valued $150,000.

The men were represented by Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat. He told the court that his clients were beaten by the police to confess to the allegation and to sign confession statements.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to the defendants being released on bail citing the seriousness of the charges. The Magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favour and remanded the fisherman to prison until March 27.
