Fishermen left adrift after bandits robbed them off Corentyne Coast

Corentyne: Five men armed with firearms and cutlasses attacked and robbed fisherman Leslie Veerasammy and his three crew members off the coast of No. 43 Village, Corentyne, on Saturday December 17, at about 12:00hrs.

The bandits pulled up their boat alongside the victims’ boat where they were fishing, held them up and took away a quantity of fish, fish glue, grocery, a 48 HP outboard engine, a 12 volts battery, a compass and a GPS and escaped, leaving the victims adrift.

Forty-six years old, Leslie Verasammy, of Mon Repos Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, and the other crew members managed to reach ashore yesterday and reported the matter to the police who arrested four men, acting on information received.

Subsequent investigations led to the location of the boat suspected to have been used in the robbery and the recovery of two unlicensed 12 gauge shotguns and 8 cartridges.

The four men are in police custody as investigations continue.
