Georgetown: In the aftermath of the closure of Guyana’s airports, hundreds of Cubans are stranded and Cuba’s Ambassador to Guyana along with business partners and the relevant authorities have arranged flights for the Cubans on Friday and Saturday.

Cuba’s Ambassador to Guyana, Narciso Reinaldo Armador Soeorro said a solution is being sought to assist the stranded persons in Guyana currently since the government ordered the airports closed from March 18 to 31, 2020 because of the coronavirus.
“The door of the embassy is opened for all Cubans who want to communicate with the embassy, and we were informed by Aruba airlines that two aircrafts, one on Friday (March 20, 2020) and one on Saturday will be available to assist,” the ambassador said.
He called on all Cubans who are stranded to keep in contact with Aruba airlines.
“We are very sorry for the situation, but it’s a situation that is international and a worldwide problem, we are asking all Cubans to take necessary precautions and contact can be made with the Cuban Embassy anytime during working hours,” Ambassador Soeorro said.
He explained that there are two flights from Georgetown to Cuba, “one at 8:00PM Friday night and one at 8:00PM on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM) President, Halim Khan said that provisions are being made to ensure that the stranded Cuban have a meal and are taken care of while they wait.
“Its hundreds of Cubans and we are doing all that is possible to ensure that everyone receives a meal and take the necessary precautions as they await the flights,” Khan said.
He explained that the Cubans visit Guyana mainly for commerce and would usually only have funds to spend a few days in the country, as such many were not prepared for the abrupt airport closure.
