Fly Jamaica crash lands, eight injured

Georgetown: A Fly Jamaica flight destined for Canada returned to Cheddi Jagan International Airport after takeoff making an emergency crash landing Friday morning. Eight persons were injured and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

There were 120 passengers on board inclusive of two infants and eight crew members.

Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson said the flight departed at 2:10am, informed the Control Tower of issues with the aircraft around 2:21am and requested an emergency landing. They touched down at 2:53am, the plane coming to a stop just off the edge of the new extension to the runway.

They have met with Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson.

Fly Jamaica in a press release stated “we can confirm that Fly Jamaica flight OJ256 bound for Toronto has returned to Georgetown with a technical problem and has suffered an accident on landing.  At this time, we believe that all 118 passengers and 8 crew members are safe.  We are providing local assistance and will release further information as soon as it is available.”

The crash site has been secured and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority had also launched its own investigation. A hotline has been set up for persons seeking information on their friends and family members – 592-261-2281.
