Focus on solar engery

Barbados will host a CARICOM meeting today designed to replicate the penetration of local solar water heaters throughout the region.

The Barbados model of solar water heating development has been the subject of discussion within CARICOM and the United States Agency for International Development (USIAD) assembled a team from the Oak Ridge Laboratory to study the impact which the industy has had on the island and to determine the net benefits to the economy, environment,the financial gain to householders and businessess installing solar water heaters.

Barbados rank first in the Western Hemisphere and fifth in the world in the penetration of solar water heaters per 1000 population.

The meeting is under the chairmanship of Joseph Williams CARICOM's chief renewable energy technorcat.
