Former Cop sentenced to life imprisonment over sodomising boy

Jailed: Milton Kewley

Georgetown:  A former policeman was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment for simonizing a 13-year-old boy.

Milton Kewley, 50, was sentenced by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the High Court after being found guilty of the offence a day prior.

The former cop was convicted of raping the teen in 2013.

“I think that the jury made a mistake; I would never have sex with any male.

“I am not attracted to any male; God is my witness,” Kewley said in pleading innocence.

During a plea of mitigation, Kewley’s attorney Maxwell McKay told the court that his client worked as a counsellor and was an active member of the Universal Church of God.

State Prosecutor Lisa Cave had pleaded with the court to impose a heavy sentence on the accused, citing the age of the victim at the time, arguing that Kewley abused his position of trust.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a possibility for parole after serving 45 years.

On Monday, the jury’s decision was returned after more than two hours of deliberation, but it shocked Kewley, who had cutting words for the 12 jurors. He looked directly at the panel, telling them that they will all be judged for sending an innocent person to prison for a crime he did not commit. The offender professed his innocence several times, saying that the guilty verdict was a mistake, as it was based on false evidence.
