Former director of UDC wins wrongful dismissal case

Bridgetown.

Former director of the Urban Development Commission (UDC) George Edghill , has won the wrongful dismissal case he brought against the Government.

Justice Jacqueline Cornelius yesterday awarded Edghil $809,744.43 with interest at six percent per annum and cost for two attorneys.

On February 7, 2008, then Prime Minister David Thompson held a press conference and announced that Edghill had been dismissed with immediate effect.

He was accused of appointing Andrew Payne as deputy director of the UDC during a period when there was no Minister.

The court found that Payne was appointment was discussed and agreed to by the UDC board and by the outgoing Minister Mia Mottley.

Justice Cornelius called Edghill dismissal reprehensible in the extreme.Prior to his appoinment to the UDC Edghill was the deputy General Manager of the National Housing Corporation.
