San Fernando: Former Prime Minister Patrick Manning is showing remarkable progress, he is now forming words and has reportedly asked his relatives to take him home.
It's now just under 72 hours since Mr Manning suffered a mild stroke as the family continues to rally the nation in prayer for his recovery, they are also seeking answers as to why an anti-coagulant drug which he has been taking to help his blood clot did not work.
Tests have now concluded that Mr Manning's stroke was caused by a blood clot but its a mystery to his relatives how this could have happened to a man who eats well, exercises regularly, takes his medication on time and who got a clean bill of health from his Cuban doctors as recently as November 2011.
His wife Hazel Manning says they're not sure when he will be discharged but doctors say it will be between three and six months before Mr Manning is able to recuperate fully, although the progress he is making is very positive.
He began eating heavy foods Thursday morning, which Mrs Manning says is another positive sign and she says one of his concerns was about the country.
His sister Dr Petronella Manning says the doctors told her that Mr Manning is defying all odds in the way he is progressing.
She says the clot was caused by a clot in his heart near to the pacemaker that was put by his cuban doctors.
She says Mr Manning has been very disciplined in his medication, having to get a penincilin injection at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre every month and other medication every week.
She says it appears that the medication that would have prevented his blood from clotting was not sufficient.
She says Mr Manning's file from the Cuban doctors are at this time with the doctors at the San Fernando General Hospital who are caring for him.
