Former treason accused Mark Benschop faces $20Million lawsuit-Libel on Internet

Georgetown– Former treason accused turned social activist Mark Benschop is making the headlines almost daily. Some observers call it a level of intimidation and interference on his part that triggers condemnation from Government and sections of society. Since his pardon in September 2007 by the President, Benchop went dark for a few months until he surfaced on the internet with his radio show Benschopradio and Guyana observer news peddling a series of attacks on the Government and other members of the society including high ranking police officers. His latest infraction against an assistant police commissioner George Vyphuis resulted in a $20 Million lawsuit. The injunction seeks to restrain Benschop and his associates from publishing further allegations against the commander and apologize for statements made against the President and Government.

In his affidavit, Vyphuis, the Commander of the Police ‘A’ Division, stated that on December 27, last, Benschop falsely and maliciously published or caused to be published on his website a photograph of the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Benschop which was accompanied by a caption.
The caption read, “In photo: Vyphus is saying sorry for arresting Mr. Benschop in the past. He is of the view that the PPP and Jagdeo have gotten out of hand, and need to be voted out of office.”
According to Vyphuis, the caption and content of the publication is “wholly false and libelous and is designed to mislead the public, damage my character and reputation and adversely affect my image publicly and in the eyes of my fellow policemen.
