French firefighters training local counterparts

Georgetown : Twenty-five ranks of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) are currently undergoing an intense training programme, which is spearheaded by French Security Attaché to Guyana and Suriname, Jean Le Clech and is being conducted by French firefighters.

The training is aimed at improving the GFS’s response capabilities and forms part of a wider programme whereby, the Government of France is assisting to boost Guyana and Suriname’s overall internal security. It has been running for four years and is likely to be extended for a similar period.

n this regard, ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are also currently benefiting from a training programme executed by French security personnel.

At the end of this training the best firemen from the GFS and from the Surinamese fire department will be part of a more advanced programme to be executed in Cayenne, French Guiana.

Deputy Fire Officer, Winston Mc Greggor said training has always been a very critical to the GFS as an organisation.

He explained that medical training is part and parcel of the total training of firefighters as officers need to be able to provide initial medical treatment until the more qualified medical personnel arrives on the scene.

Mc Greggor expressed the Service’s gratitude towards the Government of France and the French fire department with which the GFS has a bilateral agreement.

Thus far about 75 Guyanese firemen have benefitted from training offered through the French Government.
