Garbage collectors refuse to work

Port-of-Spain: City garbage remains uncollected this morning as collectors are refusing to work.

The workers say they are not being paid for overtime work by the City Corporation and they want the matter addressed before they hop back on their trucks.

They have particular concerns also about garbage that has been on the roads for more than 24 hours saying their health is at risk and therefore they must be compensated appropriately.

But Mayor Louis Lee Sing says the Corporation workers have developed a culture of "overtime work" explaining that workers are often don't show up for the regular hours of work but do when overtime hours kick in.

He promised this morning that a contingency plan would be in place to get the garbage off the city streets.

  1. Of course the local government wouldn’t want to pay for overtime. Why pay more? They could just launch “Clean up and Beautify part 2” so that the public would clean for free. However, general inefficiency within most public sector jobs needs to be rectified.
