Garica still not free says Comissiong

Bridgetown.

Raul Garica was finally released from Her Majesty's Prison Dodds over the weekend but according to his lawyer David Comissiong, the safe house at the Defence Force Headquarters which is now the home of the Cuban born immigration detainee is worse than what prison offered.

"If you look at the house from the outside, one would be led to believe that Mr Garica has been provided with a house that he could be relatively comfortable in and have some kind of privacy, this is not the case, Comissiong told journalists yesterday after visiting Garica.

"He is literally imprisoned in a small area of the house comprising of two rooms and a adjoining toilet and bath. This is so disappointing, after working so hard to get Mr Garica out of Dodds Prison, it is disappointing to see him in a similar restrictive prison at the Garrison", he added.

Comissiong said Garica was under 24 hour watch by two police officers, two prison officers and an immigration officer.

"He is not even allowed access to his toiletries, even for him to brush his teeth he has to be given a toothbrush by the security officer, who also has to put the toothpaste on the toothbrush and then Garica returns it after brushing his teeth", an upset Comissiong said.

"At Dodds Prison, I could speak with Mr Garica in privacy. Now for me to speak to him I am confronted with a soldier and other personnel standing in a cubicle with a glass window observing the entire conversation",says Comissiong.

Charging that Garcia was being treated like a terrorist, Comissiong said he would be discussing the matter with Chief Immigration Officer Erene Griffith today.
