Georgetown: The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) continues to contribute to nation-building through collaboration. To this end, the Force is playing an integral role in the transportation of medical personnel in an outreach in the township of Mabaruma and Port Kaituma, Region One.

This initiative was made possible through collaborations between the U.S. Embassy’s Civil Affairs Team, the Office of the First Lady, the Guyana Medical Relief of Los Angeles, California, the Ministry of Health, the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana, and the International Office for Migration.
Medical personnel on the ground delivering care to the residents consisted of representatives from the Ministry of Health, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNCHR), National AIDS Programme (NAPS), Diaspora Auxillium, the U.S. based Global Surgical Medical Support Group (GSMSG), Meditron, and the Cheddi Jagan Dental School.
The successful medical outreach underlines the U.S. Embassy’s initiatives “to support Guyana in the areas of improved governance, enhanced security, and prosperity for all.”
Guyana’s First Lady, Mrs Arya Ali, U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Sarah Ann Lynch, and a media team visited the region on Thursday, July 5, 2021. Hundreds of residents welcomed them. The officials received a first-hand appreciation of the works done at the outreach by local and overseas Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
Approximately 2200 residents of Mabaruma, Port Kaituma and neighbouring communities accessed medical care. Medical personnel tended to concerns in Dentistry, Gynecology, Family Planning, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Optometrics, HIV Testing and Counselling, COVID 19 Testing and Vaccination, and Malaria and Environmental Health, among others.
Displaced Venezuelan migrants, who continue to settle in the region, also accessed medical care during the outreach.
First lady Mrs Arya Ali gave the feature address to the residents of the Mabaruma and neighbouring communities while Ambassador Lynch pledged her government’s continuous support in Health, Education, and Protection to assist the region’s migrant crisis, which has been ongoing since 2017.
Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley and Mayor Chris Phang welcomed the collaborators’ assiduous efforts and overwhelming support. The region’s leadership reiterated their pledge to work with the administration and other relevant stakeholders to develop its people.
The five-day medical outreach began on August 2 and will concluded on August 6.
