Georgetown: The Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission will on January 15 meet to address the recent request by A Partnership for National Unity to be allowed to conduct a verification suing the original Statement of Polls.
APNU by way of its Election Agent Joe Harmon had made the request of GECOM saying that it was impossible to reconcile the digital copies that had been supplied by the commission with the party’s copies.
When contacted Public Relations Officer for the Commission, Vishnu Persaud, opined that it did not seem like an unreasonable request on the part of APNU but it will be ultimately up to the Commissioners’ to make the decision.
The previous meeting of the Commission was on December 22, 2011 after which they went into recess.
Harmon by way of a letter on January 3 informed GECOM that they completed verification of the SOP provided.
“After a full and careful examination, we have found it impossible to reconcile the two sets of SOPs since in a significant number of instances the SOPs are not identical, which, you will concede, they ought to be. Consequently we are renewing our original request to access the original hard copies of the SOPs in GECOM's possession…. It is our understanding that you have expressed a willingness to provide a space at GECOM's premises to enable us to carry out a further verification, this time with the hard copies, yours and ours,” the coalition indicated in a letter addressed to GECOM Chairman, Steve Surujbally, dated December 30, 2011, and released to the media.
