Gecom held firm to it’s mandate and delivered an election that can withstand scrutiny- Chairman Surujbally

Georgetown- In his final comments during the declaration of the final 2011 results, Gecom chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally said that the results have been arrived at in accordance to international best standards and practices. He said that while many were impatient that the declaration came almost 3 days after the polls, it is more important that the results have gone through checks and balances to maintain accuracy and a near impeccable process.

While he understands the anxiety of the citizens, he added that they must be assured that their ballots are meaningful.Surujbally commended his staff which he calls the A Team headed by the Chief Elections Officer Gocool Boodhoo. Commenting on the long delays, the chairman said that the statement of polls from every polling stations across the country were double checked by the returning officers to reflect the results and the end of polls. Once an error was detected, the process is halted for the particular district until the issue is corrected . He said that the political parties should not argue about the delay since they are the ones who insisted that Gecom stick to the laws and use the statement of polls as the guide to arrive at the final count.
