GECOM says checks and balances causing delays in election results

Georgetown : Chief Election Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield, last evening indicated that there are certain “checks and balances” in the Representation of the People’s Act that have to be followed hence the delay in the results of the May 11 general and regional elections.

At present the election body is in receipt of “close to 1800” of the 2499 statement of polls (SOPs). He disclosed that the Region Nine votes are in but that those from Regions 1, 7 and 8 were still to arrive.  The election body is currently processing the statements for Regions 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10.

Asked about alleged incidents of abnormalities during the voting process raised by the incumbent People’ s Progressive Party/Civic, GECOM’s Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally said that while the body is aware of some of the claims being made, no evidence has been provided, nor has any official correspondence indicating such, been received. He stated, “Please give us the evidence”.

Lowenfield added that the only issues raised thus far, concerned the voting procedures was for joint services members but these have been investigated and explained to the satisfaction of all parties.

With regards to any political party expressing its dissatisfaction with the final official results, the GECOM head said, “The law will take its course”. The call for the electorate to wait on GECOM’s pronouncement of official results was once again reiterated by Dr. Surujbally.
