Georgetown : Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally said there are instances today where his staff has lapsed and unfortunately they will be fired.
Those persons have already been removed from their positions for what he termed ‘expressed dotishness’, “and in that sense there have been vacancies and their positions have been filled, because of the very many competent staff that we have to take over positions of that nature,” the GECOM head explained.
Dr. Surujbally expressed satisfaction that observer groups are calling in to tell GECOM where they are encountering some aberrations, “and we are acting on them immediately. So really there is nothing monumentally new for me to share with you other than there is peace and quietude during the polls, people are settling in.”
Some anomalies have also been found and GECOM is correcting those with immediacy, he assured.
One of those was the case of a lady who had been flagged by GECOM as having registered on two occasions. When the person turned up to vote, she brought both ID cards. “Because she was flagged, we were able to pick her up and she came in. We didn’t disenfranchise her, the incorrect card was taken out of circulation,” explained Dr. Surujbally.
