Georgetown: The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Tuesday took a majority vote not to renew the contract of embattled Chief Election Officer (CEO) Gocool Boodoo.
At the Commission’s statutory meeting of March 12, 2013, requests were made for the Commissioners who make up the board to renew his contract. However, this was not done. The Commissioners seem to have several issues related to Boodoo’s past performance.
At the moment the position of CEO is being filled by Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Calvin Benn. There were however earlier reports that some at the Commission were not in favour of Benn acting in that capacity.
There are reports that the Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally is in favour of having the CEO position advertised in the Caribbean, a suggestion that was reportedly dashed by the Commissioners representing the parliamentary opposition.
The government side opted to retain Boodoo. However, the opposition commissioner noted that he was lacking in many skills.
